“Cars 2″ will be delayed from its planned June 24, 2011 release to December of that same year. This conflicts with another planned Disney release, fairy tale “The Bear and the Bow,” leading some to speculate that another delay announcement is imminent. Either that, or “Bear” will claim the summer spot now vacated by “Cars 2,” assuming it’s ready by then.

Owen will be returning to his vocal role as Lightning McQueen as well as Larry the Cable Guy as Mater.

Cars 2 (still no mention of World Grand Prix) follows Lightning McQueen and Mater as they travel the globe in their continuing adventures. The plot of Cars 2: The Race of Champions takes the automotive duo to Cars universe parallels of locations in Japan, Italy, Germany, France and England for competition against world class racers! During the course of their globe trotting, Mater is mistaken for a top spy named Finn McMissile, making for some great hijinks.

Details on what Lightning McQueen and his automobile friends will be dealing with in “Cars 2″ have been unraveled. Empire reported that producer John Lasseter has shared the plot details of the “Cars” sequel at Disney presentation in London’s Leicester Square on Thursday morning, September 10, revealing that the movie will also revolve heavily on McQueen’s friend, Mater.

In this animated movie, McQueen along with his pit team and new pit boss Mater will travel around the globe for the Race of Champions. The race takes place in five different countries, Tokyo, Italy, Germany, Monte Carlo, Paris and London, and involves the champions of different disciplines like Formula One and rally driving.

During this race, McQueen’s buddy Mater will provide this animated comedy movie with an action adventure twist. The intellectually-challenged tow truck will get involved in a “Hitchcockian” case of mistaken identity, save the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile, and become embroiled in a huge spy thriller.

“Cars 2″ will have “Ratatouille” producer Brad Lewis as its director. Stepping in to replace original helmer, Lewis is making his Pixar-directing debut. The movie is likely to hear the familiar voices of Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen and Larry the Cable Guy as Mater. Pixar eyes a summer 2011 release for this sequel.

Will the sequel to Pixar’s Cars be named Cars 2: World Grand Prix? It could be if Disney blog Jim Hill Media’s report is true.

Due out in June of 2011, JHM is reporting that Disney has bought a few online domains which point to the new movie’s name:

The sequel to 2006’s hit, Cars, is believed to focus on Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) who are traveling abroad. Audiences got a taste of the international flavor in the short Tokyo Mater which was attached to Bolt last year.

Pixar director John Lasseter took a moment to give a bit of insight about the Cars 2 movie, check it out:

The original animated picture focused on the adventures of Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), a race car who detours into the small town of Radiator Springs.

Lasseter told Sci-Fi Wire that the first film’s entire gang of cars will be heading out on the highway in Cars 2.

He said: “It’s Radiator Springs, and then the characters go to other places as well.”

The filmmaker also revealed that a decision had not been made whether or not to recast the late Paul Newman’s Doc Hudson character, adding: “We haven’t really [addressed it yet]. We’re still working on that”.

Cars 2 is scheduled to open in cinemas in 2011.
