Ben Stiller has been talking about making a “Zoolander” sequel ever since the first film hit theaters. But then came the bad news, that Paramount Pictures was not willing to fund the second installment.

But just recently we posted a leaked Paramount email that “Zoolander 2″ was being written by Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2, Tropic Thunder). And now comes word direct from Ben Stiller that the sequel is in the works. He wrote on his Twitter account: “Is ‘Zoolander 2′ happening? — Yes. Working on it now with my buddy Justin.”

Stiller previously stated that the sequel would focus on Derek (Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) ten years later. In the movie, nobody knows who they are and they are working hard to re-invent themselves. “Derek gets hired to be a personal model for an Arab Sheikh and he finds out models are being turned into oil,” he said.

Jonah Hill is in talks to play the villain.

Zoolander 2 is now showing up on Owen’s IMDB page, confirming his returning role as Hansel!

Not much in the way of plot has been revealed yet, but I’ll let you guys know when I hear more!

Owen is also loaning his vocal talents to the upcoming film Turkeys alongside his good friend Woody Harrelson and brother Luke Wilson. “A couple of turkeys travel back in time to the first Thanksgiving dinner in order to save future generations of their feathered friends from getting gobbled up at holiday meals.” It is currently scheduled for a 2011 release.

What’s better than being really, really ridiculously good-looking like Zoolander? Being really, really ridiculously good-looking in the 2001 cult classic’s sequel. Finally, Paramount and Ben Stiller are pulling together a PG-13 Zoolander 2 with Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2 writer Justin Theroux who’ll also direct. I’ve learned that Ben and Justin are working on the script together, and Theroux is going to Fashion Week in Paris to “immerse himself on what is current in fashion”. “It’s got momentum,” a studio source just told me. Everyone’s hoping Owen Wilson co-stars again but no deal is set. The villain likely will be Jonah Hill who’s in negotiations.

If you remember, Zoolander came out on September 28, 2001, right after 9/11 so no one ever saw the pic in theaters. But it was a hot DVD and is still a bestseller on iTunes. And when Ben Stiller goes overseas, he’s always asked to do “Blue Steel” which is saying a lot about a movie that earned only $45M domestic and $16M international because of its lousy timing. The problem is that no one’s sure what the sequel can do because the original was so thwarted. Paramount wants to keep the budget below $50M so what’s being discussed is some upfront reductions in exchange for bigger upsides. And yet everyone still really wants to do the pic in order to bring Derek and Hansel to life again.
